Moraine Park Campground is the largest campground in Rocky Mountain National Park, and it is also one of the most popular. It is located 2.5 miles from the Beaver Meadows Entrance Station on Bear Lake Road, and is the only campground in the park that is open year round. It’s also one of the lowest, at 8,160′ (2487 m).
The campground is moderately forested and has beautiful views of the surrounding mountains peeking through the trees. Two major trailheads are within walking distance of the campground, and the free shuttle bus also stops here, so it is an ideal location for those planning to hike.
It’s also close enough to Estes Park that it’s easy to run into town for some groceries or a bite to eat. The Country Supermarket is the closest, about 10 minutes from the campground.
The campground has a large amphitheater, with nightly ranger programs during the summer. The view from the amphitheater is stunning, and having the sun set around you as the mountains become silhouetted against the stars is an experience to remember.
The campground has 244 RV (40′ limit) and tent sites. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring, with access to potable water and flush toilets (summer only). Although there are no showers, there is a shower stall for those who travel with a solar shower bag (affiliate link).
Firewood and ice are available for purchase. Pets are allowed in campgrounds, but not on trails in Rocky Mountain National Park.
Reservations are recommended if staying in the summer. In the winter, water is turned off, and only vault toilets are available. During the winter, the campground is first-come, first-served, and only 77 sites are available.
This is a good choice for people who: want to stay in the National Park, like nice views and/or trees, would rather have basic services than lots of amenities, need a lower elevation campground, want to be close to Estes Park.
